Kesää ja hyttyset, kesä ja mansikkakakku, kesä ja matkustelu!

Summer and Mosquitoes, Summer and Strawberry Cake, Summer and Traveling!
Traveling is wonderful! It all starts with a decision to make the journey, the thought of the destination and the preparations. Waiting is often part of the process, although you some times want to leave at a short notice. Also in this I am two-folded; I like to come to a new destination and go where my nose points, but I also like to browse websites, read other people’s experiences and flip through books. Sometimes I list things that are a must-see, think about how to travel to them, and even make daily plans. Then I arrive, and realize that no, the plan is not going to get implemented at all! More interesting things to see pop out or the weather does not favor the plan. Anyway, traveling with all its stages and versions is great!
Summer is a time for me to explore my homeland. A Helsinki day or few of them happens in the summer. This year, I have had time to make a few well targeted trips.
Turku! One of the most beautiful cities in Finland. Great also in winter. always something to see in Turku. I just have to walk to the Aura River and sit in cafes or in a restaurant. My batteries charge easily.
This summer I updated my experience of the familiar, traditional tourist destinations in Turku. I had received relatives from England and thus there was a good reason to visit Turku. So we head out, and first of all we experience the magnificent tunnels on the motorway. Girls have not driven through tunnels like this before.
On the way to Turku we stop at the Muurla store. Glass and Finnish design of interest to my guests, and that is certainly worthy of presentation
Bright sun guides us in a parking lot near Turku Castle and Oops! we have arrived in the Middle Ages. On the green there is a tournament going on and the artisans have opened their sales stalls. As a bonus, we get to caress horses and admire medieval clothing.
The castle never disappoints you. It is very impressive every time. The Castle Museum has plenty to see, even if you have visited it many times. I appreciate the presentations and narration of exhibitions. I love the thick stone walls and corridors that many castle maids, servants and knights have walked along. Imagination makes a big leap there!
As I said, the Aura River is dear to me. I walk by the river many summers and winters, , but I do not get enough of its beauty. At the same time, the atmosphere is calm and continentally lively. The cafes and restaurants give the same feel as the south beach promenades, but the vegetation, the calm river and your own mind make the situation peacefully beautiful.
In fine weather it is a pleasure to walk towards Turku Cathedral. The cathedral is impressive and perhaps a little scary. Outside, the church is awesome. Inside, the atmosphere is mysterious and peaceful. I think about those buried under the floor of the church. Are they important churchmen, merchants, nobles, and what their fate has been. The enormous organ of the Church impresses every time.
I haven’t been to Turku Artisan Museum for a few years, so it’s wonderful to go there! In the area you could spend hours walking from one cottage to the next and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. This time we didn’t have a lot of time, but enough to see the whole area.
Here, as in the castle, I am thinking of people who have crossed the threshold of the house before me. Maybe to buy a rope, a new kettle or brought a broken key for repair. I also imagine a tired maid leaning on the log wall of the house and resting for a moment before entering the yard.
The houses of that time are so healthy! The air is fresh, the proportions somehow safe and cozy. Yes, I have a pretty romantic picture of that time …. Of course I know how difficult, challenging and tiring life has been. In any case, it is tremendously interesting to see the craftsmen’s hut and grounds. The feeling is made so real by two women in a shop, dressed in the spirit of the time. It’s very easy to imagine traveling on a time machine.
When the kids were young we went to Linnanmäki, a theme park, every summer. Doing that with young children was often quite tiring, and the parents couldn’t afford to enjoy it. Now I go to Linnanmäki mainly to feel the area and to have some fun. Linnanmäki has become one of my favorite destinations.
These girls, almost adult companions, get their wristbands and fun can begin! There is a huge amount of rides, something for everyone. There are several ways to get your head mixed up. It’s fun to watch and listen to how much fun people have. If you sit on a bench and close your eyes you can immerse yourself in this fun world in a whole new way.
There is a loud roar from the adjacent device. The device whispers and whistles and music plays. However, it cannot hide the screams of people which tells about the enormous burst of adrenaline that the scary, wonderful device has caused. At some point of the ride you are certain that you cannot last until the end, but when the device stops you want to go immediately again.
A group of children walks past and laughs loudly at a funny lottery win. I open my eyes and see a yellow soft toy, but I don’t recognize it. Maybe it’s just a stuffed creature.
There is a little boy sitting in a carriage, crying, definitely tired and feeling sleepy. A bottle of water makes him calm down, and soon, under a curtain, it’s easy to fall asleep. Suddenly I concentrate on the scents. Popcorn! Must have! Sweet cotton candy, French fries, waffles! Even the ice cream smells, sure, or do I imagine? Can I get everything?
I open my eyes as as brakes go on at the end of the spin. Girls do not get tired! Every ride must by tried, and that’s why we’re here.
Another city attraction this summer is Porvoo. A standard destination for me. Already as you approach the city, my eyes turn to the red log houses, which stand alongside the river. That familiar row of houses tells us that the old town of Porvoo has been reached. Another landscape that I can’t get enough of. We turn again to a parking lot and head towards the center of the old town along the cobbled street.
As a miniature person, I’m stopping first at a toy store which carries a wonderful selection of dollhouse stuff
Good coffee and pastry ranks second in importance.
Otherwise, free movement in the area is just what I miss and what my guests seem to enjoy. We admire the river landscape between the red houses and visit the shops for old items. Just when we get to the car, summer rain begins. We escaped it!
Domestic tourism is wonderful, and one never should say that I have already been there and there. It is worth returning to the places you have already seen, always finding something interesting and new. And for those of you traveling to Finland: welcome! Finland has huge number of little towns, villages and other destinations waiting for you. It is not good to head only to Helsinki or only to Lapland destinations.
Special thanks to Mimi and Lava who made these trips possible to us! Love you loads!
Wonderful travels to you!
