Mikä olisikaan mukavampaa kuin puuhailla ja askarrella porukalla? No, puuhapäivän muistelu on lähellä!

Viime elokuussa kirjoitin tänne blogiin betonin ihanuudesta materiaalina. Se on hurmannut monet! Katso täältä mitä elokuussa sain aikaan betonista ja mitä puuhailin keittiön puolella samaan aikaan.

Ehkä noin vuosi sitten miniäni kysyi minulta, haluaisinko järjestää hänelle ja hänen sisarilleen betonipäivän. Ai että haluaisinko? Joku heistä oli tätä kysynyt, kun tiesi, että olen betonin kanssa leikkinyt. Ei muuta kuin tuumasta toimeen. Saimme sovittua yhteisen päivän toukokuulle.

Betonin kanssa ei viitsi sisätiloissa askarrella, parasta on levittäytyä pihalle ja aurinkoinen kevätsää on luksusta. Kannattaa valita pihalta paikka, johon saa helposti vettä, joka on melko tasainen ja että ei haittaa vaikka alusta kärsisi. En ole itse mitenkään tarkka pihastani tässä mielessä. Se on koko alaltaan puuhailua varten, mutta tämä sananen sinulle, joka haluat säilyttää upean nurmikkosi upeana, etkä halua, että osa siitä tallaantuu betonipuuhissa.

Pientä vinkkiä annoin osallistujille jo ensimmäisessä viestissä, että ennättävät säästää purkkeja.

Kannattaa miettiä ja suunnitella mitä haluaa tehdä ja säästää esim. juguämpäreitä, purkkeja yms. Muotti yleensä hajoaa puuhassa.

Betonin valamiseen käy siis melkein mikä purkki tai astia vain. Lasi ei ole hyvä, särkyy liian helposti. Tosin mekin tässä käytimme pilttipurkkeja sisämuottina, kun ne ovat niin sopivan kokoisia. Lasipurkkeja voi toki käyttää niin, että jättää sen betonin sisään, esim. tuikkukuppia tehdessä. Parhaita on semmoiset, jotka saavat prosessissa hajota, ja joita ei muutenkaan tarvitse suojata tai varoa. Kierrätyslaji!

Meillä oli käytössä isoja jugurttiämpäreitä, pulloja, pikku jugurttipikareita, muovisia kukkapurkkeja, muovisia juustokuppeja jne. jne.

Kaikilla oli aika hyvä visio siitä mitä haluavat tehdä. Käytiin hieman prosessia läpi, kumihanskat käteen ja betonia sekoittamaan.

Koko juttu alkaa muottien valmistamisella. Suojataan, jos suojattavaa on, maalarinteipillä voi sulkea reiät, joista betoni valuisi ulos, öljysimme muotit, valmistelimme tukirakenteita ja niin, nauroimme, suunnittelimme ja minä tietysti kuvasin! Kuvaan aina!

Tässä askeleittain mitä teimme, myöhemmin lista tarvikkeista:

• Kasaa kaikki tarvittavat välineet ja aineet lähellesi
• Valmistele muotit: mitä haluat tehdä, valitse muotti, valitse sisämuotti, öljyä, suojaa, teipitä, tarvitaanko tukea?
• Sekoita betoni pussin ohjeen mukaan
• Lusikoi tai valuta betoni muottiin. Kiirettä ei ole, betoni ei kuivu ihan heti.
• Napauta muottia tasaisella, kovalla pinnalla saadaksesi kuplat pois ja saadaksesi tasaisen pohjan
• Aseta ”lisäosat” esim. lasinen purkki, putkilo, betonimassaan
• Lisää koristeita astian reunaan, jos olet niin suunnitellut
• Aseta tuet, jos niitä tarvitaan
• Jätä valos kuivumaan
• Kastele valosta silloin tällöin, betoni ei saa kuivua liian nopeasti
• Noin viikon kuivuttuaan voit poistaa muotit repimällä, ujuttamalla betoni pois muotista tai vain kaatamalla se ulos, joskus käyt helposti
• Betonin karheaa pintaa voi halutessa hieman hioa, mutta muista, että tämä ei ole keramiikkaa, vaan pinta saa mielellään olla krouvi ja epätasainen
• Koristele teoksesi, jos haluat: voit maalata sen, akryylimaali käy hyvin. Voit liimata pintaan koristeita, voit lisätä esim. pajukranssin sen ympärille tai tehdä pinnalle mosaiikkia
• Jos käytät esinettä sisällä, esim. pöydällä, liimaa sen alle huopaa, että pöydän pinta ei naarmuunnu

Tarvikkeihin ei saa montaakaan euroa kulumaan. Kierrätysmateriaalia on jokaisella ja betonipussi ei maksa paljoa. Tämä sopii siis loistavasti pikkubudjetille. Kiva puoli on myös se, että tätä on helppo toteuttaa isollekin porukalle. Jos kaikki on tekemässä ensimmäistä kertaa, voidaan prosessi käydä ensin yhdessä läpi ja tehdä ehkä kuppi tai kaksi yhdessä, mutta sen jälkeen jokainen voi toteuttaa omia ideoitaan. Toisaalta betonityö voidaan toteuttaa vaikka ryhmätyönä!

• Betonilaatu S30
• Vettä
• Betonille sekoitusastia, esim. muovivati
• Sekoituskeppi
• Kumihanskat
• Erikokoisia muotteja
• Maalarinteippiä
• Muovipussi, jos haluat vuorata jonkun astian
• Tilkka öljyä
• Metalliverkkoa, jos teet ison esineen, joka vaatii vahvistusta
• Koristeita, jos aiot upottaa ne märkään betoniin
• Tuikkuja, jos haluat upottaa ne märkään betoniin
• Viinipullon korkkeja, jos haluat tehdä ruukun pohjaan reiän

Concrete with friends

What would be more fun than crafting with a bunch of people?

Last August, I wrote here a about the beauty of concrete as a material. It has charmed many! Look here what I made from concrete in August and what I was doing on the kitchen side at the same time.

Maybe about a year ago my daughter in law asked me if I would like to have a concrete day for her and her sisters. Really, would I? One of the sisters had asked this, as she knew that I have worked with concrete. We agreed on a common day in May. Concrete cannot be done indoors. It is best to spread out into the yard and a sunny spring weather is always a luxury. It is worth choosing a place,  where you can easily access water, that is fairly flat and that does not suffer from stepping and going about. I’m not in any way precise about my yard in this sense. This is for you who wants to keep your gorgeous lawn gorgeous.

I gave to the participants some tips before the day.  T could save jars and cups.

You should already think about what you want to do and save molds, jars, etc. The mold usually breaks down.

Glass is not good, it breaks too easily. We used baby food jars as an inner mold since it was just the right size even if it was glass. Glass jars can be used inside the concrete, for example when making a vase or a candle holder. The best ones are the ones that can get broken in the process, and they don’t have to be protected or guarded. Recycling Event!

We had large yogurt buckets, bottles, little yoghurt jars, plastic flower cans, plastic cheese cups, etc. etc.

Everyone had a good vision of what they wanted to do. We went through the process, rubber gloves on and concrete mixing started.

The whole work starts with making and preparing molds. With masking tape you can close unwanted holes, oil the molds, prepared support structures if needed.

We laughed, we designed and of course I photographed! I always do!

Here’s what we did, step by step, a list of supplies later:

• Collect all the necessary tools and materials for you
• Prepare the molds: what you want to do, choose the mold, choose the inner mold, oil, shield, tape, need support?”
• Mix concrete according to the bag instructions
• Spoon or pour concrete into the mold. There is no hurry, concrete does not dry out immediately
• Tap the mold on a flat, hard surface to get the bubbles off and to get a flat bottom
• Place” add-ons eg glass jar, tube, to the concrete mass
• Add decorations to the edge of the container if you have designed it
• Set up support if needed
• Leave to dry
• Dampen from time to time, concrete should not dry too fast
• After about a week of drying, you can remove the molds by tearing the concrete out of the mold or just pouring it out, sometimes you can easily do that
• The rough surface of the concrete may, if desired, be slightly sanded, but remember that this is not ceramic, but the surface should preferably be robust and uneven
• Decorate your work, if you want: you can paint it, acrylic paint works well. You can glue decorations on the surface
• If you use your object inside, eg on a table, glue underneath it some pads so that the surface of the table is not scratched

It does not cost a lot to have a concrete day. There is recycled material in every home and the concrete bag does not cost much. So that’s great for a small budget. The nice side is that this is easy to implement for a large group of people. For first timers it is best to go through the process and maybe make a cup or two together, but then everyone can make their own ideas. On the other hand, concrete work can be done even as a teamwork!

Here’s a list of supplies, maybe you don’t need everything, or perhaps something is missing:

• Concrete grade S30
• Water
• For concrete, a mixing vessel, eg a plastic bowl
• Mixing Stick
• Rubber Gloves
• Molds of different sizes and shapes
• Masking Tape
• A plastic bag if you want to line a container
• Splash of oil
• A metal mesh if you make a big object that requires reinforcement
• Ornaments if you are going to immerse them in wet concrete
• Candles if you want to embed them in wet concrete
• Wine bottle caps if you want to make a hole in the bottom of the pot
